Two Festivals in One Day
Shikotsuko Ice Festival is opening from 10AM to 8PM.
And private hire for one hour before opening or after closing is available.

From 16:30 the light-up begins, and the venue becomes a different place — colourful, theatrical, beautiful in its own way. But once the lights are on, the clean daylight blue is gone for the day. If the blue is what you want, we shoot it before the lights, never after. And it’s usually super cold in the night.

The Honest Part: Crowds
The busiest moment is the light-up, around 17:00. Between 10:00 and 14:00 there are quieter windows, and I use them. But my real answer is different: the venue offers private hire for one hour before opening or after closing — on weekdays, before 9:30 or 21:30–24:00; on weekends and holidays, before 9:30 or 20:30–24:00 (¥25,000 per hour). An empty ice palace, just the two of you, is a photograph no daytime crowd shot can match. And in the morning is my recommendation.Prepare for extra cold in the morning and late night.

How a Shoot Here Works
Sessions inside the venue are short — 30 minutes to an hour — with warm breaks between. There is an ice café and hot drinks on site. You bring hand warmers, serious thermal layers under the dress and suit, and two pairs of shoes: your photo shoes, and real winter boots for walking. The footing is dark after the light-up, so we move carefully and never rush.

Where This Fits in a Day
On its own, the festival is a short, intense shoot. Inside a full elopement day it becomes the centrepiece — the lake, the onsen village and the winter road there and back are all part of the story the photographs tell. That is how I usually photograph it: one couple, one day, and the ice palace as the moment the day turns around.
What stays with you afterwards is simple — for three weeks a year this place exists, and then it melts. The photographs do not.
