Furano’s lavender is at its fullest for about two weeks in mid-July.
The fields turn completely purple, and on a clear morning the colour carries all the way to the Tokachi mountains.
The season is short, so here the date matters more than anywhere else I shoot in Hokkaido.

Beside one of the fields is Torinuma Park, where a pond of spring water sits under the trees next to the lavender. It is quieter than the famous fields, and the green of the water and the purple beside it belong to the same morning.

The best-known lavender fields draw crowds by the middle of the day.
The shoots here start early, or move to the quieter fields around them —
the lavender is the same, the feeling is different.

I photograph one couple a day in Furano and Biei, and build the day around the fields that are at their best that week.
